Join One Common Unity’s ‘Summer Strong Social Justice Institute’ for a Creative and Transformative Summer!

Our team at One Common Unity has been filled with excitement as we prepare for the beginning of our ‘Summer Strong Social Justice Institute’. We continue to call on all young, aspiring artists to join this cohort of students as we embark on a summer of theater, friendship, social-emotional learning, and building youth leadership in our community. 

This past weekend, two members of our Out of School Time and Enrichment team joined a host of community organizations at the DC Housing Authority’s Neighborhood Community Resource Kick-Off in Ledroit Park. The community resource fair was created with the intention of providing DC youth and families with the resources they need to thrive. It was a beautiful day of joy and connection amidst the sweltering heat. As the youth played in the community sprinkler and enjoyed free meals, their parents and caregivers were able to meet with agents of change in our community. 

It was a pleasure to speak with parents and caregivers who were hoping to find a summer program to help channel their children’s creative talent. ‘Summer Strong Social Justice Institute’ is a continuation of One Common Unity’s year-round out of school time and enrichment programming which centers arts empowerment, environmental stewardship, social-emotional learning, health and wellness, and social justice programming. This summer program aims to cultivate creativity, build confidence, and foster a love for the arts among participants. Whether your passion lies in theater, acting, painting, singing, writing, dancing, or behind-the-scenes production, this program promises something extraordinary for everyone.

The summer camp will be facilitated by a team of teaching artists and mental health therapists. Each week, we will engage in a variety of arts-based workshops centered on the themes of self-exploration, self-care and empowerment, social justice, and community-building. These workshops will culminate in a student-led performance in the final week of summer camp. This showcase will be open for families, friends, and community members to attend. 

Summer Strong Social Justice Institute Details:

• Dates: July 1st, 2024, to August 2nd, 2024.
• Location: Perry Street Preparatory Public Charter School (1800 Perry St. NE, Washington, D.C. 20018).
• Ages: 5th grade through 8th grade.
