Washington, DC, August 2023 – One Common Unity (OCU) proudly announces Jake Frelick, LICSW as the new Senior Director of Programs. Jake is a licensed independent clinical social worker and youth development professional.

Jake worked as the Arts, Leadership, and Health Manager at a community-based organization in Chicago called Alternatives.  Jake received his Masters degree in Social Services Administration from the University of Chicago. While there, he studied and performed improvisation at iO Theater, Annoyance Theater, and The Playground Theater, as well as theatrical clowning at the Neofuturist Theater. Jake also worked as a clinician/group facilitator with The Second City’s Improv for Anxiety program.  At the same time, Jake founded a professional learning collaborative called Therapeutic Improv Professionals, which connected practitioners within the therapeutic arts community

In 2019, Jake joined OCU’s School-Based Mental Health (SBMH) expansion program at SEED DC PCS. Since then, he has held various roles within the organization, including Clinical Supervisor for the SBMH program, Behavioral Health Supervisor, and Director of Community-Based Behavioral Health.

In his new position as Senior Director of Programs, Jake will actively support all of OCU’s direct service programs by enhancing existing program offerings and spearheading the development of new initiatives that align with OCU’s mission and values.

I am so excited for One Common Unity’s bright future! Since I started working with OCU in 2019, I’ve been so fortunate to work alongside passionate people who use the arts and activism in their youth development practices!! I’m looking forward to supporting our current programs, while finding amazing opportunities to build out new programming ideas that we haven’t even dreamed of yet.”

About One Common Unity

For more than 20 years, One Common Unity’s (OCU) high-impact, holistic programming has engaged over 35,000 youth, families, and educators in the DC area to lead a shift away from violence through in-school and after-school programs, mental health services, citywide campaigns, teacher trainings, family engagement sessions, community concerts, and art showcases.

One Common Unity builds compassionate, healthy communities through the transformative power of music, arts, and peace education. The organization places highly skilled artist-facilitators and mental health therapists in DC schools to improve students’ behavioral health outcomes and provide trauma-informed care.

One Common Unity’s flagship prevention program, Fly By Light, trains the next generation of youth leaders in social-emotional literacy and non-violent communication. The Intention Room, the organization’s innovative model for restorative justice, offers an effective strategy to prevent in- and out-of-school suspensions and disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline.

Founded in 2000 out of concern for the epidemic of violence in Washington, DC, and the United States, today One Common Unity’s arts education and strengths-based youth programming has evolved to offer mental wellness, conflict resolution, leadership development, and community engagement opportunities in safe, culturally appropriate settings.
